How can you build a simple and safe homemade solar projector for indirect observation?

The pinhole projector (or camera obscura) is a very popular and safe method. All you need are two sheets of opaque card. Make a pinhole in the centre of one of them. Stand with your back to the Sun and let the light pass through that small hole to project the image of the Sun onto the second piece of card, which will act as a screen. The further away you place the ‘screen’, the larger the projected image of the Sun will appear. You can find step-by-step instructions on the National Geographic Institute’s general observation page.
