What types of solar eclipse are there?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and the Earth. When the Moon completely blocks the Sun, it is called a total solar eclipse. An annular eclipse is a special type of partial eclipse that occurs when the Moon blocks the entire Sun except for a small ring around the edge.
